OnStar
General Motors trying to keep alive the OnStar. While the product has been popular among consumers, the company faces stiff competition from other manufacturers that offer many of the services of the same or comparable for free. GM, however, apply to OnStar subscribers $200 to $300 a year.
Similar to the way in which homeowners get a discount for safe home for the installation of security features such as alarms and fire detectors, GM is partnering with auto insurance companies to offer reductions in rates of insurance of car to those who use OnStar to subscribe to that service. In fact, this philosophy makes sense, because OnStar can locate vehicles stolen quickly and ask for help when there is a crash, reducing the response time of emergency and, later, save insurance companies a lot of money.
What - and who - is GM compete in this market? Ford Sync system seems much more advanced than OnStar with a user interface smoother, simpler Web connectivity and social interaction. OnStar, is reportedly playing update in these areas. In addition, many applications for smartphone and satellite dash-top navigation devices offer maps, directions, road and other communications for free assistance.
An OnStar advantage over its competitors: the ability to call for help in an accident, if the driver is aware or not. You can't do that with a smartphone!
However, as whole, the issue simply reduces cost. If OnStar will continue competing, you will have to sweeten the pot, find ways to attract customers and convince them that your product is a value of the mass.
So, are car insurance rate reductions already started by GMAC Insurance. This insurer uses readings of odometer extracted directly from the vehicles and based on miles driven, so the fewer customers drive, the greater and your discount.
GM hopes that other insurance companies, as the 21st century and Liberty Mutual, soon join in and follow the example of GMAC. While both, hope their competitors do not swallow it!
